日本語132 第九課

L9: 漢字 In this lesson we learn the Kanji with which many of our common Verbs are written. For example:

--Go, Come, Return (all MOTION verbs),

行く、来る、帰る

--Then lots of を verbs like:

--Eat, Drink, See, Listen/Ask, Buy

食べる、飲む、見る、聞く, 買う、

--Read, Write, Talk, Go Out, Put in

読む、書く、話す、出かける/入れる

--Meet, Get up, Sleep, Make and Enter

会う、起きる、寝る、作る、入る(はいる)

Since Japanese is a highly Visual Language, there may be a way in which learning these kanji for verbs helps us understand/remember, HOW the VERBS themselves work, because we "SEE" perhaps more clearly where the BASE or unchanging part of the verb is--usually represented by the Kanji--and therefore it may help keep in mind, how we inflect or conjugate them.

For example:

行く、行かない、行って、行きたい、日本へ行きたい

来る、来ない、来て、来週、来年、

帰る、帰らない、帰って、帰りたい

見る, 見ない、見て、見たい、見に 行く、行きたい

The following are all -る Verbs:

食べる、見る、起きる、出る、出かける、寝る = we may note here that 食べる and 起きる have an extra おくりがな(or "sending" kana) in the form of the べ and the き that are part of the "Base" of the verb--the unchanging part--but they are NOT "covered" by the kanji.

入れる (いれる) = put in; note how the same kanji for 入る (はいる) when written with a れ following the kanji, it stands for

入れる (いれる)= to put in and is a る-Verb, so it goes,

入れ ます、入れ る、入れ て、入れ ない with the change coming after the pre-ます stem, so after 入れ

While 入る = はいる means "to enter" and is an う verb so it goes:

入(はい)る、入ります、入って、入らない with the change coming on the R consonant

We have something a little similar with

出る/出かける and 出す (だす)

出る/出かける are both る Verbs so are pronounced either でる or でかける depending on the "sending" kana

出す (だす) is an う verb and with an "S" it behaves just like 話す so

--出す、出します、出して、出さない

Plain Negatives are all easy with the る verbs:

Just take the Stem, the Pre-ます form, and add -ない

食べない、見ない、出かけない、入れない、寝ない、起きない

So we are droping the る or the ます and adding ない

Of course,

う-Verbs: (M, K, R, S, T types) are all different:

飲む、読む、聞く、書く、帰る、作る、入る, 話す、出す, まつ

Plain negative for these う-Verbs always give us a consonant (M, K, R, S, T) + an 「あない」 sound such as:

M 飲まない、読まない、

K 聞かない、書かない、

R 帰らない、作らない、入らない

S 話さない、出さない

T またない

The one type of Verb with no consonant in the Dictionary or ます-Form, converts to a W sound in the negative:

会う、買う--> plain negative =  会わない、買わない
